I recently took the plunge and cut my long mane into the much talked about “lob”. Like every girl with long hair, the thought of cutting it petrified me. My long hair has always felt like a part of me. Hairstylist or not, we all get used to our daily grooming routines and styling our hair in the same ways that we know suit us. I wanted a change but thought short hair would give me one mundane, unchangeable look. I couldn’t have been more wrong.
My hair is naturally straight and enjoys sitting flat to my head if given the opportunity. I could wash my locks & run out the door only to achieve the lifeless look. For the ladies trying to tame fuzzy manes, this probably sounds like a dream. However, those of us lacking volume feel more like we have a mop hanging over our ears.
If your hair sounds like mine, I cannot recommend this cut any more. First of all, the condition improved an enormous amount. My hair was instantly so much thicker and for the first time ever I naturally had a bit of body.
So, for those of you contemplating cutting it all off but are not sure what you will do with it thereafter, here are some of my favourite styles for short hair that are super easy to do at home.
Beachy waves give my new locks an effortless look. It takes me a quarter of the time to achieve this style it and my shorter hair holds this so much better. I could get two days out of it whilst before my wave could be gone in a few hours.
Products: Kevin Murphy Full.Again Thickening Lotion, Kevin Murphy Body Builder Volumising Mousse or Kevin Murphy Anti Gravity Oil Free Volumiser, Kevin Murphy Doover Finishing Spray or LABEL M Sea Salt Spray.
Styling: While my hair is wet, I massage Anti Gravity Oil Free Volumiser (mousse is fine too) into the root and put Full.Again Thickening Lotion from the mid ends to ends of my hair. I blast dry my hair without brushes or styling until completely dry. For best results, I recommend using a curling wand next but the same look can be achieved with a straightener. I then section my hair and curl the middle part of each section, leaving the end straight. I then let the curls set for a few minutes before running my fingers through the sections. To finish off the look I add Doover Finishing Spray or Label M Sea Salt Spray for added texture and that tousled beachy look.
Half Up, Half Down Top Knot
This is really cute and funky style on shorter hair. It dresses the hair up with minimal effort. Its great for days you’re not washing you hair.
Products: Dry Shampoo & Texturising Spray (I recommend Label M Dry Shampoo & Sea Salt Spray)
Styling: Minimal styling is required here. Add some dry shampoo to the root, a little texture spray to the ends. This look is supposed to be a little tousled so there is no need for major styling. Separate the amount of hair you want in your bun and up it goes. Tease the bun until it’s the size you like. Et voila, an effortless style for short hair.
Adding a scarf or headband.
I am all about hair accessories but options can be limited for shorter locks. This is why I love a cool scarf or headband.
Styling: Clipping your hair back and adding a headband is super funky and really easy. To soften the look loosely pull through your fringe or a few bits of hair out the front of your headband.
This can look really cool on short hair. It can give the hair added texture and fullness. It can dress up an outfit or look with very little effort.
Products: Texture Spray and Volume Powder (I recommend Label M Sea Salt Spray & Kevin Murphy Powder.Puff)
Styling: Spray the hair with plenty of texture spray. Gather all of your hair on top of your head and twist it until you have created a bun shape. Put a bobby pin to hold the bun in place (you can use a few if you need to). Finally play around with “messing” your bun until you achieve the desired look.
The tousled voluminous curl
I love this look, it’s so 90s. A major side partying curled with your favourite hot tool.
Products: Volume Powder & Light Hairspray (I recommend Kevin Murphy Powder.Puff & TIGI Masterpiece Hairspray)
Add some light backcombing or some volume powder to the root. Spray the rest of the hair with some light hair spray. It’s a great effortless looking style for your favourite night out. If you have a natural curl in your hair, and want to keep it, drying it with a diffuser really defines your natural curl and adds masses of volume. Adding curl cream and some light mouse when it’s wet and adding texture spray as your finishing product to achieve a really natural, volumised look.
I love braids as they can funk any style up. The more dishevelled the braid the nicer it looks. On certain short hair you can do two dutch braids and clip it in the back. This can be a really funky, cute style that’s off your face. The more you pinch and pull at the braid and messier it looks and the nicer it is. Braiding the two front sections of your hair and clipping them back with waves is a gorgeous look for an event or just to dress up your short hair.
